Gamer Camp seeks Games Developers
29 Sep 2009 5pm
Gamer Camp seeks Games Developers - Deadline ExtendedWould-be game makers in the West Midlands are being offered the tantalising chance to develop and produce games for Apple’s phenomenally popular iPhone, as part of a four-week training course by Birmingham City University and Screen WM supported through Advantage West Midlands.
Gamer Camp, a Birmingham-based training course for aspiring games artists and programmers from both within and outside the ever-expanding industry, runs for five days a week between 16th November and 11th December 2009.
“Successful applicants will be given one week of professional training in either game programming or interface designing, followed by three weeks of mentoring in which they’ll work with other participants to produce their very own game for the iPhone,” says Rebecca Ashby, Commercial Project Manager at Birmingham City University’s Screen Media Lab.
iPhone games produced as a result of Gamer Camp will then be free for anyone in the world to download via the massively-popular iPhone store (publication subject to approval by Apple). Teams of budding game-makers also get to present their game to a panel of industry experts – including a representative from 4iP (a fund for interactive media projects with potential public good), at the culmination of the four weeks.
“Guy Wilday, who has many years experience in the games industry as a former Studio Director at SEGA Racing Studio and Head of Studio at Codemasters – responsible for the influential Colin McRae Rally series, will lead the training process,” adds Rebecca. “This will include separate workshops for coders and games artists, along with three evening masterclasses also open to people outside the course.”
Areas covered by the course include game design principles for mobile devices, an introduction to and advanced tuition in the iPhone software development kit, and cool tricks and optimisation techniques.
To be eligible for Gamer Camp, applicants must be based within the West Midlands region, and fit either the following programmer or games artist criteria.
Programming applicants should have, and be able to demonstrate:
• C programming skills
• Experience working with Windows, Mac OS or Linux API’s
• Must be able to present a game demo or design document for a game that demonstrates interest in sector

Changes to Immigration Tier 1
24 Feb 2009 12pm
The Home Office has announced changes to tier 1 of the points based system for immigration. Tier 1 applicants will now need to hold a Masters degree and earn at least £20 000. Further information is available at www.rec.uk.com and from the Home Office web site http://ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/Those affected will still be able to work in the UK under tier 2; requirements under this tier include the job being advertised in the UK first and their employer being registered with the Home Office as a sponsor. As tier 1 applicants do not need a sponsoring company this change could affect members who supply tier 1 workers on a temporary basis. It is not possible to sponsor migrants for temporary jobs. The change is due to take effect on 1st April.
We advise that those clients affected get their own independent employment law advice.
Story from the BBC, Games will 'eclipse' other med
12 Jan 2009 2pm
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7821612.stmGames will 'eclipse' other media
Mike Griffith cited Guitar Hero as a sign of the influence of gaming
Video games are poised to "eclipse" all other forms of entertainment, according to games studio boss Mike Griffith.
The Activision chief made the bold call during a keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
He said video games were prospering as interest in almost every other category of entertainment declines.
Mr Griffith said social gaming, more interactivity and better technology would help gaming dominate the entertainment landscape in future.
He said: "Movies, recorded music and TV - these are all stagnating or contracting entertainment sectors."
40% growth
He quoted US market statistics which showed that between 2003 and 2007 sales of movie tickets fell by 6%; the number of hours of TV watched dropped by 6%, sales of recorded music slumped 12% and purchases of DVDs remained flat.
Over the same four-year period, said Mr Griffith, the video game industry grew by 40%.
"Video games are poised to eclipse all other forms of entertainment in the decade ahead," he said.
Gamers will spend longer with James Bond than moviegoers
The success of Guitar Hero, said Mr Griffith, showed how influential gaming had become on many other entertainment sectors.
He quoted Nielsen SoundScan data which showed that artists whose music featured on Guitar Hero had seen a rise in download sales of 15-843%.
The game had proved so popular that some bands, such as Metallica and Aerosmith, were bringing out a version of the game that only features their music.
"Music has a history of evolving through technology and we are at the beginning of the latest chapter in that story," he said.
Technology, community and interactivity were the three factors that would help the video game industry become the driving force in entertainment, said Mr Griffith.
'Story telling'
The powerful processors in consoles such as the PS3 and Xbox 360 meant that games were getting ever more realistic and immersive, he said.
"Games are no longer pre-set trips through linear mazes," said Mr Griffith. "They are becoming a legitimate story-telling medium that rivals feature films."
He cited the video game of the latest James Bond film Quantum of Solace (QoS) as an example of how games were taking over.
Guitar Hero players are sharing their own musical creations
"The moviegoer is passive whereas the gamer is active and part of the game itself," he said, adding that anyone who played QoS would spend more than 50 hours in the company of James Bond compared to only 106 minutes if they watched the movie.
The communities growing up around titles such as Guitar Hero World Tour also showed how entertainment was changing, he said.
Owners of the game had created 141,000 tracks of their own using its in-built mixing studio and uploaded them to the Guitar Hero community site, which now has more than 600,000 members, he said.
More interactive controllers such as the guitars and drums in Guitar Hero and the Wiimote on Nintendo's gaming console were also helping encourage more people to take up gaming, said Mr Griffiths.
"Those new controllers are encouraging new ways to become more socially active in gaming," he said. "They are bringing in a whole new group of consumers that have never before been involved in gaming."
He concluded: "The one thing that is for sure is entertainment is changed forever with gaming."

Audits: A Developer’s Best New Year’s Resolution
29 Jan 2008 4pm
Audits: A Developer’s Best New Year’s ResolutionBy Ed Dille, CEO FOG Studio (www.fogstudios.com)
If you are an independent developer or licensor, this article is a MUST READ!
If I had a nickel for every time I heard a developer shy away from auditing their publishing partners for fear of "upsetting the cow so it ceases to yield milk," I could have retired to the islands by now.
In the early days, audits only occurred when there was a breakdown in a relationship between publisher and developer, and the developer wanted to give the publisher a working over. So it was a bit of a vengeance play which also contributed to the negative connotation about auditing. While it is true that publishers don't like to undergo audits because it usually ties up one of their already busy people for at least a week, upsetting the apple cart is less of a consideration than it used to be.
These days auditing is seen by both sides more as just good corporate governance. Bigger developers have third-party shareholders to answer to, plus they have licensors they must report to at least quarterly, and this is part of what is expected for appropriate protections. Whether your studio has these external reporting requirements or not, you need to read on and learn when it makes sense to audit and why. Because, if you are seeing some of these flags and doing nothing about it, you could be leaving serious money behind.
FOG Studios exclusively uses our strategic partner Media Forensics for our auditing needs and, yes, although this article is designed to educate the community to a very serious issue, I am shamelessly plugging these guys as well -- and for good reason. Over the last five years, Media Forensics has done more than 50 audits on game publishers with a 100% success rate of finding errors in favor of the developer -- and recovered over $20 million for its independent developer clients in the process.
Let me say that again: 50 audits, 50 wins! Not a shabby heavyweight record. And their most recent fight netted the lucky development studio $800,000 against a $16,000 audit cost.
“Hey, wait a minute! 100% errors?” you shout. “Does this mean all the publishers are just lining up to put the screws to us?”
“This does not mean that publishers are deliberately attempting to hide money,” says Media Forensics CEO Tim Christian. “The main issues that cause errors are contractual interpretation and leaky accounting systems and processes.”
Game development is a business where everything begins boilerplate and ends up a custom negotiated agreement between the parties. While the nuances of contractual interpretation on modifications to net sales definitions or other important recoupment language may be readily apparent to yourselves and the negotiators who cut the deal with you, consider the situation of the royalty accountant down in finance who is tracking hundreds of SKUs across multiple territories and retail channels in a publishing system where every agreement is different. His or her process is built from the ground up around the way the boilerplate works and they simply do not have the time or the inclination
to track the variations from that process. Add to that the fact that 18 months to two years elapses between the time the agreement was signed and the royalty accountant is involved in the first place, during which the original biz dev people and even the accounting personnel may have changed, or the boilerplate upon which the entire accounting system is based can change as well. You should be beginning to develop a good picture of the issue.
“The tendency of the accountant is to do the same for everyone and wait until he is audited,” says Christian.
Christian offers a lot of good advice when it comes to determining when the time is right to audit.
“First, it is important that the title has either recouped or is close to recouping. If the title is massively underwater, it is unlikely we are going to bring cash into the developer. It is also probably best that a title is in the market 12 months before audit, the first one should occur between 12 and 18 months, and then, if you have a big title with legs, follow on audits should occur every 12 months thereafter. The reason for this is because even though you have had a recovery, the financial systems the publisher is using may not have changed based on the audit results, or royalty accountant personnel have changed and there may be a whole new way internally that they are doing it.”
To determine if one of your titles is a good candidate for an audit, start with some common sense and some math. One of the telltale signs to look for is whether or not you are getting royalty reports on time. If the publisher is consistently late and you have to harass them to get a report, that is a flag. Another flag is -- and, believe me, this is not as uncommon as you might think -- if you are not getting reports at all, which sometimes happens after titles go out of the limelight of the first couple of quarters where most sales occur though the titles may remain on sale for much, much longer. If there is a lack of organization about getting reports out on time or at all, it is likely that there are other corners being cut and mistakes are being made.
When cutting the original deal, it is important to get as much detail as possible on the royalty report. Negotiate for unit sales by territory, not just global worldwide numbers, because the more information you have, the deeper you can probe and ask questions before a potential audit, and the more effective any audits undertaken will be. Here are some top tips from Media Forensics about how to examine your reports:
•
One easy thing to do is divide gross revenues by units sold, so if you know the title is selling at $39.95 and you are seeing greater discounts than an average 25% for U.S. and 45% in Europe, this is a flag.
•
Just check the basic math of the report. There is a presumption that people are using some kind of sophisticated accounting program. But you would be surprised at how many common, human-introduced errors exist in the reports companies send out, let alone the underlying data.
•
Is the rolling reserve being calculated correctly? Review reports quarter to quarter. When it is taken on one quarter, is it added back correctly in the quarter it is recouped?
•
If the developer does the math, asks the questions, and applies common sense and they either don’t get answers -- or the answers don’t make
sense -- then don’t be afraid of threatening an audit to get the answers you need. If necessary, follow through on that threat.
•
If you are contemplating doing a new deal with an existing publisher of your work, an audit can also be a tool to gather great intelligence about price points, average discounts, how net sales and MDF are calculated, and cost of goods before negotiating your next deal.
Once you have decided that an audit may be warranted, you simply provide the contract and royalty reports to Media Forensics, then they will give you an estimate of how long it would take and how much it will cost. Naturally, you should negotiate your contracts to provide that the publisher will pay for the reasonable costs of an audit in the event that errors are found greater than 10% in favor of the developer. But, either way, the financial risk of requesting an audit is quite small. Of the aforementioned 50 audits that Media Forensics has done, only one recovered less than the cost of the audit itself.
So there you have it … a quick-and-dirty primer on why you should audit and some startling statistics to back it up. If you are already reaching for your royalty folder, then my job is done. If you want Tim Christian to give you a hand digging a little deeper, you can click on his name in the e-newsletter to generate an e-mail. Please be sure to tell him that Ed sent you as I’m sure he’ll appreciate the referral.
I sincerely wish you both -- as always -- Good Hunting!

ATTENTION EMPLOYERS! Anti discrimination law
09 Oct 2006 4pm
As you should be aware the law regarding discrimination changed on 1st October. The best advise we have found so far is provided by ACAS. If you follow the link below you will learn what your responsibilities are.http://www.acas.org.uk/media/pdf/d/t/6683_Age_and_the_Workplace_AWK.pdf
See you at the Games Festival

OPM will be attending the inaugural London Game Career Fair to be held at London's Café Royal on the 3rd and 4th of October 2006. We can be found at stand Number 5, and in addition to offering an opportunity to meet the consultants who will help you find your dream job/employee, we will be having a prize draw, giving away some goodies, and selectively distributing the now legendary OPM Green Pens. If you still don't have the 2006 design in your collection you simply must come over and grab one. We only have a handful left, seriously, these will be worth something one day!
We very much look forward to meeting you there. Please call us on 01206 544044 or e-mail officemanager@opmjobs.com for further information or to arrange a meeting.

Winner! Develop Industry Excellence Award 2006
14 Jul 2006 4pm
I am INCREDIBLY proud to announce that OPM Response Ltd is the winner of this year's Develop Industry Excellence Award for Recruitment. Having been seated at a table on the back row (again) it really was a complete surprise to hear our name read out!
Recruitment is hard work and the team here works harder than most while upholding very VERY high standards. I'm just so pleased for all of them that their efforts have been recognised and rewarded.
A fabulous evening was had by all. Special thanks to all who voted for us, we will be in touch to thank you personally. To be recognised by the people who work with us on a day to day basis is the highest accolade we can ever hope for. For those (very few, so we're told...) who didn't, we will be in touch to find out how we can perfect our service for you.
Special thanks also to Stuart Dinsey for selecting our theme music, absolutely hilarious!
Kim Adcock will be attending E3

Calling all budding creative writers!
20 Apr 2006 10am
The Develop conference isn't the only creatively focused event happening in Brighton this summer. Next month, May 21st in fact, my dear school friend and acclaimed Poet and Writer, Ros Barber is hosting (in Brighton) a Fringe Festival version of the popular short story night, Eat My Shorts, formerly hosted by Mr Simon Clayton.
If you are a talented short story writer (or you have a talented short story) and a confident reader of your own work, able to stick to a time-limit of 10 minutes, and you're available to appear on May 21st in the Brighton Fringe Festival for minimal glory and essentially no money, please report to Ros's tent immediately. (Regrettably she can only pay expenses, and not even all of those if you're coming from north of Birmingham.)
If you are a potential member of the audience, please make note of the date in your diary.
Marlborough Theatre, Brighton, May 21st, 7.45, and stand by your beds.

Who REALLY works in the Games industry?
19 Oct 2005 2pm
Survey reports on gender, age and ethnicity behind the scenes of the games industry. The International Game Developers Association has announced the results of a survey which polled over 6,500 employees to establish the typical demographic makeup of the games industry and answer the question "who makes games?"
Respondents answered a series of questions relating to gender, age, sexual orientation, education, ethnicity and disability amongst several other variables. The results, which have been posted on the IGDA website, reveal a largely unsurprising male dominance in the industry.
According to the survey, the industry workforce responsible for the creation and development of commercial videogames consists of an overwhelming majority of males, with just 11.5 percent of respondents being female. If the industry ever expects to attract the same level of revenue from an audience of female gamers, it might seem that challenging the development community's demographic may be the best place to start.
Ethnicity results also showed a marked lack of diversity in the industry, as 83 percent of respondents were white. Black respondents made up just 2 percent of the results, with Asian workers making up the highest percentage of minority groups at 7.5 percent. 92 percent of respondents were heterosexual; just 2.7 percent of respondents are gay and 2.7 percent bi-sexual.
The average age of the industry workforce was revealed to be 31 years old, and 80 percent of respondents have achieved at least a university level education, with the average industry experience levelled at 5.4 years.
In a statement of intent for the survey, the IGDA commented: "As producers of creative products it is important to recognise that we all bring our individual life experiences into the process of creation and our products reflect those life experiences, as well as our ideas and assumptions. A diverse games workforce is therefore more likely to reflect and resonate with the diversity of ideas, experiences and preferences within the market."
Commenting on the results of the survey, which appear to reveal quite the opposite of diversity in the workforce, executive director for the IGDA, Jason Della Rocca, stated: "As an industry, we need to wake up to the fact that games exist in a broader societal context that is constantly changing."
